Synopsis

Rabbits and hares are best known for wearing pocket watches and velveteen jackets, as beloved storybook characters and for their impressive ability to procreate. But as we delve deep into the natural world, you’ll see how real rabbits and hares are far more fascinating than can be imagined!

They are keystone species that play a vital role in ecosystems from the Rocky Mountains to the deserts of Arizona, from the northern reaches of Canada’s frozen boreal forest to the concrete jungle of downtown Chicago.

Ninety percent of the Earth’s land mass is home to a creature so tenacious, yet so adorable that it rarely gets the respect it deserves.  ‘Remarkable Rabbits’ will change all that as we explore the close relationships rabbits and hares have with the landscapes they call home. And, increasingly, their home ranges are under threat. There are over 60 kinds of wild rabbits and hares and, contrary to popular belief, despite their remarkable ability to reproduce, many of them are actually in danger of being eradicated.

Learn how hares are more than just a rabbit of another colour, and hold your breath as we take to the water to learn how swamp rabbits, the Michael Phelps of the rabbit world, have managed to survive in their ever-changing landscape.
Join scientists in the field as they work tirelessly to save native rabbit species from the brink of extinction and, and as they reveal ground-breaking new scientific discoveries about how snowshoe hares, these seemingly vulnerable balls of fur that are on everyone’s dinner menu, turn the tables on their predators and start to control the game.

But most of all, gain a new appreciation for species that are the underdogs of the natural world. We challenge the common misconception that the world is awash with bunnies as we explore the incredible challenges rabbits and hares face in the wild — from habitat loss to climate change — to learn how even though their numbers are down, we shouldn’t count these important and under rated animals out.
