Glowing green mushrooms with ribbed patterns, reminiscent of living light, grow on a dark piece of wood in a dim environment, creating an ethereal, otherworldly appearance—a vision worthy of 2016's Jackson Hole Science Media Awards.

Jackson Hole Science Media Awards 2016: In the Realm of Living Light

September 2016: Boston’s prestigious Jackson Hole Science Media Awards have handed out the grand prix of the festival – the Grand Helix Award – to the illuminating and enlightening documentary ‘David Attenborough’s Light on Earth’. The film exploring the mysterious phenomenon of bioluminescence is a TMFS production in co-production with CuriosityStream in association with BBC and UKTV produced by Ammonite.

This documentary was finished as a tribute to Sir David Attenborough’s 90th birthday in May 2016.

The Grand Helix Award is reserved for productions which are able to convey science topics in a particularly creative and inspiring way. “It’s wonderful”, CEO of Terra Mater Factual Studios, Walter Köhler, happily states. “It’s just wonderful that this documentary receives the recognition it deserves. Its overall unique and new approach to cinematography, editing, capturing of atmosphere and narration follows through the whole 50 minutes and never even for a split second leaves you bored – but in awe of our world, and what’s happening out there when we least are able to see it.”

Director Joe Loncraine excels in telling stories, while cinematographer Martin Dohrn is considered as the world’s expert for filming in the dark; a combination of these two, ‘David Attenborough’s Light on Earth’ attempts and accomplishes to excite the audiences by showing bioluminescent animals briskly glowing away in the dark, and thereby explaining behaviour which even experts in the field never had encountered before.

“The Science Media Awards only take place every second year, making for an even tougher competition”, says Head of TV of Terra Mater Factual Studios, Sabine Holzer. “The winner for the Grand Helix Award is picked by the festival jury out of all the projects and productions which were submitted to the festival; it is being chosen from all the categories available. Being awarded this special prize really means a lot to all the people involved in this production.”
